“Smartphone Medication Reminders” Medication Reminders offered through mobile technology is evolving as the new and effective tool for improving medication adherence. Mobile technology medication reminders can be implemented with smartphone apps or other techniques such as SMS (Short Message Service) Text messages and less private emails. MotionPHR and Red Ribbon, HIV Health Manager apps for the iPhone generates both email medication reminders and SMS Text medication reminders. The user has the option of selecting one or both options to receive their reminders. These applications have overcome a few of the limitations of the iPhone device by utilizing the personal Google account and Google Calendar. It's important to note that Internet connectivity is required to setup your reminders and to receive email reminders. The cell phone network is necessary to receive SMS/Text messages. As part of the medication reminders features, both the motion PHR and HIV/AIDS Red Ribbon Health Manager have the ability to setup multiple users with as many reminders as necessary to adhere to their doctors instructions. This includes multiple medications to be taken at different times of the day. The application even lets you setup a “display” name in the event that the user wants to be descrete about their meds when the actual email reminder or text is displayed on the phone or device, e.g., “the blue one” as suggested by one of our application users. iPhone RedRibbon, a personal health record (PHR) application, has the most robust medication reminders and refill tracking features in any SmartPhone application currently available. The HIV/AIDs community has embraced the benefit from this indispenable technology. This application will be available on numerous new Google Android based SmartpPhones as they are released through the coming year. CSI is on the fast track to bring their Personal Health Record and HIV Health Manager to the numerious Android phones that are hitting the market in 2010. This will bring these applications to multiple carriers (Verizion, AT&T, T-Mobile) in many countries and many manufacturers. The upcoming release improves the robust smartphone medication reminders already a part of CSI's iPhone health applications offering by offering “in application dialing” to call their doctor or their pharmacy. Another important medication adherence feature scheduled to be released in 2010 is Observations of Daily Living (ODLs). Patients can improve the results of HAART drug therapy and other HIV medication adherence programs by using smartphones medication reminders, email, and SMS texting technology. Utilizing these technologies is an important step in empowering the patient to become more responsible and participate in improving their own health. Chronic disease now accounts for 75 percent of the nation's $2 trillion in medical costs (1). Numerous studies about medication adherence with prescription regimens have demonstrated that among those with chronic conditions that there is only 20 percent to 50 percent compliance (2). Yet another statistic by Osterberg, L. and Blaschke, T., shows that non-adherence by all patients results in $100 billion in annual healthcare costs (3). Smartphone medication reminders is one of the best first steps to improving medication adherence. CSI hopes in particular that our HIV Health Manager will make a difference in HIV medication adherence for those that are HIV-pos and are on HAART and other critical medication regimens. ODL's is the next step to bring patients in the loop to create a forum for better communication with their physician and ultimately better results from their medication and treatments. This type of personal tracking of information about your health can then be used to create easy to read reports for the physician. CSI plans to release their ODL for the Smartphone Q1 2010.
